I first signed up for Lynda Maynards' French Pattern Drafting Class to help me improve my fit and alteration of commercial patterns and was surprised to find that Lynda's class opened my eyes to the idea of drafting my own patterns - an aspect of sewing I’d never expected I’d get involved with, and frankly considered beyond my skills.
Studying with a teacher like Lynda and being inspired to try new things – that’s the kind of thing that keeps me, enchanted by sewing!

Hi Laurel, just listened to this episode. It is funny, I hadn't had a place to sew for several years, and when I found your podcast, it made me want to get back to it. I still don't really have a place, but I commandeered the coffee table in the living room (that might get hubby enthused about moving the stored stuff in the spare bedroom, that I've been asking for for awhile now, haha). The funny part is that you and I seem to be following similar paths. I want to learn how to alter patterns so I can have really well fitting clothes, and have taken several Craftsy classes to better understand how to achieve this. One of the classes I took was done by Susie Furrer for the bodice moulage and sloper. I was excited when you said that you had taken the drafting class, and I understood what you were describing. You mentioned Susie's book, and Amazon's cost (me, too). But Susie has an updated book that is much more reasonable. You can order it from the website for her school; http://www.apparel-arts.com/
ReplyDeleteWe both have husband stories concerning the moulage... I was tickled the other day, my husband had evidently been watching me as I drafted my moulage from the measurements that he had helped me take. He asked me what I was doing, and I explained similar to you that it was going to help me be able to alter patterns so they would fit. After I had sewn the moulage, and showed him what I had achieved and that it came from the drafted pattern he saw me drawing, he told me that he was very impressed that I could take measurements and process those into something that actually fit my body. It was really cool.
Hey thanks for the update on Susie Furrer! I have been involved in a major sewing area/books/wardrobe purge since before and after a lengthy vacation - yes just an excuse for not getting much in the way of sewing done! - and had hoped my Susie book would turn up as I pulled all my sewing books off the shelves (from a variety of places of course) and donated the ones I was no longer into.
ReplyDeleteNo Susie/Suzie. Oh grr.
But now I know I can replace it. I'm still going to keep looking for awhile.... because you know what happens when you give in and do that.

Just checked the site - definitely 'Suzy'. Very tempting to buy that book, but I sure don't want to spend the $$ and have it turn up right away!
